Many first time dog house buyers are a little overwhelmed by all the options out there. It can be challenging to figure out what you really need in your doghouse. This first thing you will need to determine is if you really need an outdoor dog house for your pet.
A dog that is used to being indoors most of the time will not take kindly to moving outdoors even to the best dog house. Dogs are pack animals and single dogs will probably want to stay near you indoors. While your dog may still be an indoor dog you may need a dog house which can provide nice temporary shelter for when your dog is outdoors.
Some dogs, such as guard dogs, will need to live outdoors full time. Dog houses for these types of dogs will need to be very sturdy and comfortable. It does not matter how long a dog is used to being outside always check him regularly so you know he is safe.
A larger dog house will not always provide more comfort for a dog. This is especially important for dogs in cooler climates. When a dog house is too large your dog will not be able to produce enough body heat to warm up the dog house. The best dog house will be just large enough for your dog to turn around and stretch out without touching the walls. The door to the dog house should be large enough to enable your dog to enter without crawling.
The floor of the dog house needs to be several inches from the ground to protect against water and moisture. Bedding can be made from straw which is changed regularly. If you live where it snows you want a sloped roof to allow the snow to run off. There are chemicals which can be toxic to your dog in pressure treated wood so it should not be used for any part of the dog house that your dog comes into contact with. Before you decide that your dog should live outdoors make sure it can handle it. Smaller dogs are usually not built for outdoor life while larger working dogs should be fine.
