Dogs have always been called man’s best friend and it is easy to see why. They are lovable and loyal companions and no matter what, they are always excited to see you. There are so many types of breeds that all have their historical information and what their different strengths are. Not only are dogs a great companion to have, but they are very helpful in certain careers as well and can be much smarter than you may ever think. The first area where dogs known as the K9 unit are used quite a bit are on the police department. A large amount of training is done for these dogs to help officers in various duties. Often, they are used to go in and track down a criminal after they have escaped the crime area by using their terrific sense of smell. They can also been used to intimidate and if needed, chase down and attack a criminal who may have run away.
Dogs use their sense of smell and are trained to locate specific smells that no person would ever be capbel of doing. In addition to being able to track down a humans scent that has committed a crime, they can assist in locating a lost person by picking up the scent off of their clothing. They may also aid a detective to sniff out drugs in a school where just walking down the hallways, they will be able to locate a locker that may have drugs in it. Some pest businesses have also trained canines to smell out bed bugs that are too microscopic to be viewed by the human eye or even rodents that could be trapped in the heating vents.
Another job our beloved canines are becoming extremely helpful is to assist a person that may have some form of disability or illness. For many years, dogs have been trained to assist people that are blind by leading them around by a short leash or harness through the various obstacles of life. Today, they are trained to assist those with physical disabilites and may not be able to use their arms or legs by getting all of the things they may need and getting it for them. Many dogs have been trained to dial a phone for their owner. Other dogs are now trained to detect an upcoming seizure in those that suffer from epilepsy and warn their relatives before it happens. In this kind of work, these dogs are absolute lifesavers.
The final kind of job many dogs do is to help farmers or ranchers with their livestock. These herding canines such as Australian shepherds or border collies have a natural ability to herd sheep, cattle or other animals for the rancher or farmer to get them to a different place.
